Chapter 1179: He... Doesn’t Matter
Nicole’s tone was flat, utterly calm, even a little chilly.Andrea Greenwood stared at Nicole for quite a while. Seeing that her reaction didn’t look fake, she quietly let out a breath. "Nicole Seys, I hope you’re very clear about this: my marriage with Brother Jose is something both our families’ elders approve of, and it’s already settled. I’ll soon be having Brother Jose’s baby. As long as I’m pregnant with his child, this engagement will never be broken for life. It’s fine if you don’t have feelings for him, but if you do, I suggest you kill that thought early. The Seal Family’s door isn’t something you walk through just because you feel like it. Marriage is still best when the families are well matched."
Nicole looked at Andrea, at that hint of contempt in her eyes, and whatever shred of goodwill she’d had toward her vanished. Standing in front of Andrea, Nicole smiled faintly. "You’re right, marriage is best when the families are well matched. After all, the Seys Family’s reputation in City C is right there. Even if I’m a withered, used-up woman, there’ll still be a line of people waiting to marry me. So as for the Seal Family’s door, Miss Greenwood, you go ahead and drive your little maid in yourself."
She could put up with being looked down on for anything else, but never for her family. Andrea Greenwood had no right to sneer at the Seys Family, a true prestigious house.
As a daughter of the Seys Family, she would never allow anyone to say even half a bad word about them.
Andrea’s face instantly turned rather ugly. She bit her lip, looked at Nicole, and spoke in a low, hesitant voice: "You’re... from that Seys Family? The political dynasty..."
Nicole gave a cold laugh, her gaze cool as it fell on Andrea. "I’m not the least bit interested in what’s going on between you two. Before you look down on someone for not being your equal, maybe first figure out who they are. Otherwise I feel embarrassed on your behalf."
With that, Nicole turned, ready to leave. She had no desire to waste any more words on Andrea.
"You said you wouldn’t go after Brother Jose. I hope you keep your word. With your background, it’s easy to find a man whose family and conditions are excellent. Since you don’t love Brother Jose, then don’t mess with him. I’ll be a good wife to him. I hope you don’t disturb our happiness."
Andrea’s voice rang out behind her. Nicole didn’t even pause in her stride, heels clicking as she walked away.
Back in her room, Nicole made herself a cup of the herbal tea Olivia Summer had given her. Standing on the balcony, she held her phone and chatted with an old classmate abroad, a cardiac specialist, about Olivia’s recent condition. When she heard him say that, in this situation, her recovery counted as very good, she finally let out a breath of relief.
Seeing how concerned she was about the patient, the classmate sent a voice message: "You’re this worried about a middle‑aged woman’s condition—is she your future mother‑in‑law?"
She hadn’t heard this classmate’s voice in ages. Hearing it again, Nicole found it rather pleasant—low, magnetic, with a gentle warmth that made people feel at ease.
Nicole’s fingers stiffened slightly. After a ten‑second pause, she slowly typed out a line and sent it: She’s a friend’s mom.
He quickly replied: "A guy? An important friend?"
This time Nicole answered very fast: Not important.
Staring at those two words she’d just sent—"Not important"—Nicole pressed her lips together, her gaze darkening.
"If he’s not important, why are you so invested in his mother’s illness? You’ve been discussing cardiac issues with me for half a month now. Nicole, you’re not being honest. All right, I won’t tease you. I’ve got a surgery to do. Talk next time, bye."
After typing out "bye," Nicole stood on the balcony with her phone in hand, thinking of his earlier questions, a complicated look surfacing in her eyes.
She ended up standing there for over an hour.
Unconsciously, she’d finished half her cup of tea when a wave of pain surged through her lower abdomen. It hurt so much that her fingers dug into the cup in her palm, while her other hand pressed against her belly.
The pain grew sharper and sharper, so intense that even someone like her, who’d gone through grueling training in the army, couldn’t straighten up...
