Chapter 11 Attack
Chapter 11 Attack
Upon hearing this, Dmitri quickly walked to the front of the car.
Lu Ye followed him and looked in the direction he was pointing. In the middle of the road, there was a small patch of soil that looked a little off.
Victor walked over to Dmitry and pointed to the patch of soil: "Captain, this soil is a darker color than the surrounding area."
After saying that, he picked up a twig and gently brushed away the surface soil: "There are tire tracks, but they're very shallow, as if they were deliberately covered up."
Lu Ye narrowed his eyes.
Indeed, the soil in that area was unnaturally smooth, creating a subtle contrast with the surrounding ground churned up by artillery shells.
More importantly, at the edge of the soil, there is an almost invisible thin line buried under fallen leaves, extending towards the roadside bushes.
"Tripping rope?" Seryozha had already crouched down by the roadside at some point, with a sniper rifle on his shoulder and his eyes pressed against the scope.
"Possibly." Dmitry's face darkened. "But these aren't ordinary tripwire mines. This setup is too obvious, it looks like..."
"Barefoot." Lu Ye blurted out.
Everyone looked at him. Dmitri's expression changed, and he gave Lu Ye a deep look.
"That's right!" Dmitri pointed to the terrain around the area: "The road here is narrow, with slopes on both sides. If we stop here to clear mines, we'll be right inside the firing range on both sides."
He pointed to a patch of bushes above the slope on the left: "And those bushes look like they've been recently trodden. There are several fresh scratches on the tree trunks on the right."
"Seryozha, on the left slope, within a 300-meter radius, observe carefully."
"clear."
Seryozha lay on the ground, mounted the SVD on his backpack, and pressed his eye against the PSO-1 scope.
Lu Ye also raised his observation scope and aimed it at the area on the right.
"On the left, at the edge of the bushes, a reflection resembling a gun muzzle has been spotted." Seryozha's voice was calm and steady. "Approximately 280 meters away, at a relatively high angle, it's likely a sniper position."
"On the right side, near the scratches on the tree trunk, we found signs of loosened soil," Lu Ye added. "Someone recently dug there; it might have been a machine gun emplacement."
Dmitry paused for a moment, then made a decision: "Probe it. Seryozha, fire a shot at the suspicious position to the left and see the reaction."
"receive."
Seryozha adjusted his breathing and placed his finger on the trigger.
"Bang!" The bullet struck a rock on the left slope, sending sparks flying.
Everyone waited, but there was no response.
"Fire another shot, to the right," Dmitry ordered.
"Bang!" Another shot rang out, the bullet burrowing into the soil on the right, kicking up a small cloud of dust.
Nothing happened yet, and Dmitri frowned.
He walked to the suspicious patch of soil, examined it carefully for a moment, and then made a bold decision: "Maxim, get the rope, let's try pulling on it."
Maxim took a roll of nylon rope from the second vehicle, tied it to a rock under Dmitri's direction, and then threw it far into the area.
The stone landed, the rope tightened, and nothing happened.
"Not a landmine?" Peter muttered to himself.
Dmitri remained vigilant and gestured for Maxim to pull the rope hard. The stone dragged across the mud, stirring up a patch of dirt, but nothing was found.
"A false alarm?" Alexei scratched his head.
Dmitri's face grew even more somber.
He stood up, his gaze sweeping across the trees on either side: "No, this is psychological warfare. They want us to waste time and ammunition here, or..."
Before he could finish speaking, Dmitri noticed three black dots in the sky.
"Ambush! Everyone take cover!" Dmitri roared, but it was too late.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Three mortar shells landed almost simultaneously, exploding between the first and second vehicles.
The blast wave knocked Lu Ye to the ground. Amidst the ringing in his ears, he heard Dmitry yell, "Sniper! Take the high ground! Machine gunner! Suppressive fire!"
Lu Ye struggled to his feet and found that Seryozha had already dragged his sniper rifle and rushed toward the earthen slope by the roadside.
He grabbed the observation scope and spare magazine and followed closely behind.
"Left slope! At least two machine gun positions!" Seryozha shouted as he ran.
"There are some on the right too! They're moving!" Lu Ye noticed several figures flashing through the woods on the right; at least five or six people were flanking the highway.
The two men collapsed at the top of the earthen slope. Seryozha quickly set up his sniper rifle, while Lu Ye lay beside him, his scope aimed at the battlefield.
"Distance, 320 meters; wind speed, 3 meters per second on the left," Lu Ye quickly reported the data.
"Received." Seryozha's breathing calmed down, and his finger pulled the trigger.
"Bang!" A burst of blood sprayed from the head of a machine gunner on the left slope, and his body slumped to the ground.
"Hit." Lu Ye continued, "Next, same position, assistant gunner, taking over the machine gun."
"Bang!" Another shot rang out, and the assistant gunner fell to the ground as soon as he touched the machine gun.
"Impressive!" Lu Ye couldn't help but exclaim, but his gaze remained fixed on the observation scope. "Right side, 280 meters away, behind a tree, rifleman."
Seryozha quickly turned his gun around, but the position was blocked by tree trunks, offering no angle for firing.
"Can't hit it."
"Lure him out." Lu Ye put down his observation scope, grabbed his AK-74M, and fired a short burst towards the tree.
"Rat-a-tat-tat!" Bullets struck the tree trunk, sending wood chips flying.
The rifleman behind the tree leaned out to return fire, "Bang!" Seryozha's bullet pierced his chest with pinpoint accuracy.
"Excellent!" Lu Ye raised the observation scope again. "Left side, new target, 350 meters away, behind the rocks, mortar spotter, observing us with binoculars."
Meanwhile, the fighting on the highway also intensified.
Alexei and Peter used the truck as cover, while a PKM machine gun spat fire, suppressing the enemy who were trying to flank them from the right at the edge of the woods.
Maxim, holding an RPG-7, aimed at the machine gun position on the left slope, and fired, "Boom!"
The rocket, trailing a plume of flame, flew out and accurately struck the machine gun emplacement's bunker, exploding into a fireball.
"Well done!" Dmitry's voice came over the radio. "Victor! Drive the vehicle off the highway and use the terrain for cover! Anton! Call the camp for backup!"
"I keep calling! But the signal is being jammed!"
"Damn it!" Lu Ye cursed under his breath. This was a premeditated ambush. The enemy had not only set up bait, but also prepared electronic jamming equipment.
"Seryozha, Lu, locate the enemy commander!" Dmitry ordered. "Take him out!"
"clear."
Lu Ye quickly scanned the battlefield through his observation scope.
The enemy on the left slope was suppressed, and the flanking force in the woods on the right was also unable to make any progress under machine gun fire.
