Chapter 1736 - 1674: Lifelong Commitment
Although Wufu was in mourning and rarely went out, she had an intelligence network, and she knew the news she needed, without missing a single one. She knew her two friends were engaged, and both were matched with good prospects.
Guan Chuying was engaged to Sheng Mingan, the eldest son of the second branch of the prestigious Sheng Family. This son was already an Imperial Examination Candidate, with exceptional literary talent, and likely could easily become a successful imperial examination candidate. He was graceful in his actions and broad-minded yet witty. Most importantly, he maintained moral integrity, as he didn’t even have a concubine or maid in his household.
The Sheng Family, being a prestigious family, had a vast estate, but the second branch, where Sheng Mingan belonged, was pleasantly tranquil. Sheng Mingan’s parents were deeply in love, and they only had three legitimate children. There were no other alluring troublemakers to stir up issues, so the household was naturally serene.
Under such an atmosphere, Sheng Mingan was likely to be a steady and amicable person. Guan Chuying herself was an emotionally intelligent lady, capable of maintaining harmony.
As for Changping, it was somewhat unexpected; she was engaged to Liang Zhuo, the legitimate second son of General Zhenguo of the court in Nanyue.
To speak of Liang Zhuo, calling him unaccomplished was not an exaggeration. He was rather well-known in the city as a young profligate. Wufu had seen him appear at clubs before.
But, despite Liang Zhuo’s profligate behavior, he acted with restraint and was genuinely kind-hearted. It was unknown how Changping came to fancy him, but surely life after their marriage would be quite interesting.
"Here you are at home, yet your news is so thorough," Guan Chuying laughed teasingly.
Wufu replied with a smile: "Your lifelong happiness is at stake, so naturally, I must pay some attention."
Guan Chuying bit her lip, wanting to speak but hesitated.
"Don’t worry, I’ve had them looked into. Sheng Mingan is a good match for you, the most important thing is his family is righteous. Marrying into his family, you won’t be overly wronged," Wufu, seeing through her thoughts, patted her hand.
Guan Chuying breathed a sigh of relief and nodded.
"But how is it that you and Liang Zhuo matched?" Wufu asked Changping with a smile.
Changping shrugged and replied: "It’s nothing much, like two peas in a pod. Whoever to marry, it’s all the same. He’s accommodating to me, and he’s the second son of the family. I’ll have the Prince’s Mansion, and when the time comes to split the family, I’ll be in charge. Liang Zhuo can’t defy me."
Wufu observed her relaxed approach and said: "Liang Zhuo is good-natured, you two accommodating each other will lead to a delightful life."
"Oh, speaking as if you’re very experienced, it’s because you’re already married!" Changping teased.
Guan Chuying gently nudged her arm, and Changping realized she’d gone too far with her joke. After all, Wufu’s marriage was urgent due to her mother’s passing.
"It’s fine, being married is the reality," Wufu didn’t mind, saying: "I speak from experience, telling you both, a good relationship relies on mutual support, always remember you’re the kite holder."
The two exchanged looks and both nodded.
"Wufu, now that affairs are settled, you’ve married Prince Jin, will you leave Nanyue for Beiyan?" Guan Chuying, being detail-oriented, brought up the most important topic of her visit.
Wufu paused, then nodded: "Planning to leave after the New Year."
"Then there will be no opportunity for us to meet again!" Changping said, a little dejected.
Guan Chuying also felt sad, her eyes growing misty.
Wufu said: "Anyway, the two nations have opened trade, and correspondence is possible."
"Right, you must not forget to write to us regularly!"
"Yes."
Though the words were spoken, everyone understood, once she left, initially there might be correspondence, but later on, the contact would likely lessen, as everyone had their own lives to lead.
